Girlz to Women, is a non-profit 501(3)(c) organization which provides positive and useful conferences to middle school girls (ages 11-15), with an opportunity for high school girls to be peer mentors in the Central Florida area.
Girlz to Women’s vision is to be a premier provider of practical self esteem learning programs for middle school girls of all races, creeds and backgrounds. It is a non-denominational, non-religious based or biased program, allowing for individual cultural expressions and beliefs but keeping clear from endorsing any religious practice. Girlz to Women addresses self esteem issues which are sadly equal opportunity offenders to any and all women at risk.
The Needs
Our teens need our help. Teen pregnancy, drug/alcohol addiction, eating disorders and violence are all on the rise. Low self esteem leads to poor decision making. Without education of life skills such as goal setting and exposure to arts and cultures, our young women of today will end up making poor choices. Their choices will impact the rest of their lives and ours.
- Approximately 750,000 teen pregnancies occur each year
- Teen childbearing in the U.S. costs taxpayers a over $9.1 billion annually
- Over 10 million women in the U.S. suffer from an eating disorder
- 1 woman in every 4 will experience physical abuse during her lifetime
The Process
Girlz to Women concentrates on building positive self esteem through teen conferences and the use of high school mentors. These mentors will be paired with attendees and co-participate in the planned activities. Mentors will also facilitate discussions on current topics and share their experiences. Girlz to Women will impact our teen’s self esteem in which our youth will make better life choices. It will create a ripple effect on their lives and their children’s lives and ultimately our community.
The Focus
Girlz to Women focus is on the prevention of poor self esteem among middle school girls. By exposing them to positive life skills, mentors and community awareness, they will make better life choices. The transition from elementary school to middle school is a pivotal time in a young woman’s life. Creating self esteem at this age would provide a great foundation for future life challenges.
